David couldn’t sit still. He paced the length of the bustling art gallery, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. He was waiting for Sarah, who was the featured artist of the evening. He spotted her near a large canvas. He recognized the way she moved. He closed his eyes.

He approached, then hesitated. A strange pressure built in his chest. He took a step, another. "Sarah?" he asked, his voice sounding thin. Her head turned. She looked at him with a polite, unfamiliar expression.

She frowned slightly. "I'm sorry," she said, her voice smooth. "Do you need help with something?" The words hit him like a physical blow. He felt his hands go numb. He felt a need to get away.
